While many people jet off on expensive holidays this summer, you can have just as magical an experience here in the UK. With its many beautiful places to explore, there are countless interesting towns that are perfect for a getaway, but, located in the West Midlands of England, it should be at the top of your list.

This historic market town is bursting with character, and as you wander through its centre, you will discover a stunning mix of medieval, Tudor and Georgian architecture. It has been named by The Guardian as having one of the best high streets in the UK, not for its beauty, but for being “full of cool independents rather than the usual chains.” They said: “Ludlow has long been known as a gastro-hub, with specialist producers dotted along the high street and market place. Visit the Mousetrap Cheese Shop, Harp Lane Deli and the Chocolate Gourmet for festive eats, or browse around Bodenhams, which sells clothes in a quirky, 600-year-old building.”

Why visit Ludow?

There are so many unique businesses to choose from when you enter Ludow, but the first stop should be the traditional marketplace that is right in the heart of the town square.

It has been trading for over 900 years and has all sorts of different stalls from flea markets to artisan crafts, so you will find something no matter your budget.

Ludlow Market not only has many treasures to find but is also known for holding speciality events every month, such as the Food and Craft Market, the Local to Ludlow Producers’ Market, and even an Antique Market.

However, once you browse the local shops, your suitcase will be bursting with gifts to take home, as there are lots of family-owned businesses, such as Bensons, which sells jewellery, and Florabunda, a flower store.

If you get hungry, you should visit the Ludlow Farmshop, a truly unique location that sells locally sourced meats, cheese, baked goods and other regional treats you can only find there.

What else is there to do in Ludow?

Ludlow has become known for championing local businesses, but if you get tired of shopping and eating, there is so much to explore.

One of the most obvious places to visit is Ludlow Castle, a magnificent 11th-century ruin that was built by the Normans and offers breathtaking views of the surrounding countryside.

It is also worth taking a peaceful stroll along the River Teme to see Ludford Bridge, which not only looks incredible but also dates back to medieval times.

Just a short drive from Ludlow is the Mortimer Forest, which offers miles of beautiful scenery, no matter if you just want to take an easy woodland stroll or want to try climbing to High Vinnalls, the highest point inside the forest.

Ludlow has everything you could want in a quiet English town from historic streets, independent shops, delicious local food and beautiful countryside right on its doorstep so it is worth considering for anyone looking for a relaxing summer staycation.
