A UK city could get a new lido after the original one closed down in 1984. The port city in East Yorkshire was notorious and made it into the book C*** Towns: The 50 Worst Places to Live in the UK in 2003.

However, since this time, it has experienced a resurgence, with National Geographic naming it one of the “best places in the world to travel in 2026”. And now, there might be another reason to visit.

The East Park lido in Hull was once an iconic hot spot. On a hot day, there would be children running down Holderness Road toward the park with a towel rolled up under one arm and an ice lolly in the other.

During the 1970s, strikes and power cuts had dulled Hull's community; times were hard and with little money to spend, the parks meant free fun and relaxation for thousands of people. East Park's lido remained a firm favourite for locals from the day it opened.

The summer of 1976 was one of the hottest on record and the lido provided some much-needed relief for families. Groups of teenagers, families and trendy young couples would make their way down to the lido to cool down or get a tan.

However, the fun didn't last forever. In 1979, rumours swirled that the East Park lido might close. This was declared hearsay and firmly denied by Councillor Harry Woodford, who was the Chairman of Hull Leisure Services Committee at the time, HullLive reports.

The lido then withstood years of decline and, in 1988, it was demolished, filled in, and the animal houses were built above the ground.

Councillors agreed to look at the feasibility of reinstalling the lido in June.

Should this lido open, it would be one of two in the entire city. The lido at Albert Avenue Pools and Fitness opened in 2023 after a £10.5million makeover, and is currently Hull's only council-run lido.

East Park itself is Grade II listed and already has some other attractions including a Grade II listed water ride that was built in 1929 called The Splash Boat.

Riders head down a 30.5 metre drop into the boating lake below. The ride is only open at weekends, bank holidays and during school holidays with each ride costing £2. There are also swan pedalos at the park which cost £2 per person.
