Emergency crews have rushed to a village in Wales to tackle a blaze, amid a report an "explosion" was heard. Firefighters, police and other emergency services descended on Peulwys Lane in Old Colwyn, Conwy, on Sunday afternoon after North Wales Fire and Rescue Service received reports of a property fire.

The blaze is affecting two neighbouring homes, with five fire engines and an aerial ladder platform sent to the scene. The fire service said it was first called at 12.41pm and confirmed all occupants of both properties had been accounted for, with no deaths or injuries reported. It continues to urge members of the public to stay away from the area while crews remain at the scene. Earlier, North Wales Fire and Rescue Service said it had received a high volume of calls about the incident. A spokesperson said: "We are currently receiving high volume of calls in relation to a property fire on Peulwys Lane, Old Colwyn. Thank you for your calls - we are currently in attendance at the incident. We are asking people to avoid the area while the incident is ongoing."

Police also closed Highlands Road as firefighters tackled the blaze, with images from the scene showing a large emergency services response and a severely damaged property.

County councillor Cheryl Carlisle initially warned residents there had been "an explosion and fire on Peulwys Estate" and said Highlands Road had been closed while emergency services responded.

Providing a later update after attending the scene, Cllr Carlisle said she understood the fire had started in one house before spreading to another. She added: "Very good to hear that no one has been killed or injured.

"The community will now rally round and help the families affected, with clothing and support.

"Housing at Conwy council will look to sort emergency accommodation and we are working with housing association Cartrefi Conwy."

One local resident said they did not hear an explosion but realised something was wrong after seeing emergency service vehicles race past before later spotting smoke billowing from a property after looking out of their back window.
