Aldi has retained its crown for the UK’s cheapest supermarket for the sixth month in a row. The latest analysis from consumer champion Which? showed shoppers could save up to £66.54 at the bargain supermarket chain compared with the most expensive shop in June.

Aldi has maintained the momentum from its 2025 overall win, taking the title across 10 of the 12 months. It was only beaten by Lidl in July and October last year. The loyalty price war is also heating up, with Sainsbury's Nectar overtaking Tesco's Clubcard as the cheaper option on Which?’s list of groceries.

Based on a shop of 95 popular branded and own-branded products, including milk, cheese and Hovis sliced bread, Aldi shoppers paid an average of £163.34.

Lidl with Lidl Plus discounts came second, with an average price of £164.79. Without Lidl Plus discounts, the shop came to £164.92 – a difference of just 13p.

Asda came fourth, costing shoppers £190.39 for the list of 95 items. Sainsbury’s with Nectar came next at £193.30, followed by Tesco with a Clubcard at £194.67 and then Morrisons with More at £198.41.

Waitrose was again the most expensive supermarket in the monthly analysis, with the same items costing £229.88 on average throughout June. This marked a difference of £66.54 on average, or nearly 41% compared with Aldi.

Supermarket loyalty cards can make a noticable difference

The analysis also revealed the difference that having a supermarket loyalty could make. According to Which?, a loyalty card would save an average of 2.97% at Tesco and 5.17% at Sainsbury's over the month, while at Lidl, you would save a much smaller 0.08%.

Lidl changed its loyalty card scheme in May, allowing customers to collect points instead of receiving reward coupons. Each pound spent now equates to one point, bringing the scheme into line with both Nectar and Clubcard.

Last month, Tesco announced a new Clubcard for 16 and 17-year-olds after campaigners urged supermarkets to lift unfair restrictions on their loyalty schemes so more people can take advantage of lower prices.

What is the UK’s food price inflation rate?

Grocery price inflation fell to 3% in the four weeks to June 14, according to Worldpanel by Numerator. Shoppers leaned on promotions to keep costs down, with 30.4% of sales including a deal last month – up from 28.4% a year ago.

With the FIFA Men's World Cup under way, football fan favourites have seen their highest promotional activity in June for five years. Deals can be found on beer, cider, snacks, crisps and chilled pizza, as retailers compete for customers stocking up ahead of matches.

Fraser McKevitt, head of retail and consumer insight at Worldpanel, said: “Nearly a third of all grocery spending is now on promotion, and that upward streak shows no sign of breaking.

“Combined with strong online growth, it points to shoppers who know what they want and are increasingly confident about where and how to find the best deal. In short, retailers are having to compete hard for that summer shop.”
