The granddaughter of cult leader and convicted killer Charles Manson has received an outpouring of support after Disney+ dropped a trailer for its forthcoming documentary My Grandfather Charles Manson. The documentary launches on Hulu and Disney+ later this month and is perfect for true crime lovers.

The programme is also essential viewing for those wishing to learn more cult leader Charles Manson. My Grandfather Charles Manson, which shares similarities with Netflix's My Father, the BTK Killer, chronicles filmmaker Sophia Maddox, who uncovers that she's the granddaughter of cult leader and criminal Charles Manson, reports the Mirror.

Following the trailer's release on YouTube, numerous viewers flocked to the comments section to share their reactions. One individual wrote: "I'm not really a documentary guy but this looks fascinating! It could be the next Tiger King."

Maddox began exploring her family background after a DNA test disclosed that she was a direct descendant of Manson, prompting her to pose difficult questions about her own identity given her ancestry.

Throughout the documentary, Maddox obtains access to previously unseen or unheard recordings and other material due to being the daughter of Manson.

In the trailer, Maddox also completes a personality questionnaire, comparable to one her paternal grandfather Manson undertook, to determine if there are any similarities between them, resulting in a startling revelation.

At one moment, Maddox says: "I really can't do it anymore."

It's evident that examining her family background is proving emotionally demanding.

The trailer also features Maddox's father and the son of Charles Manson, Daniel Arguelles, who possesses a remarkable resemblance to the criminal.

Before the documentary, Manson was understood to have three sons Charles Manson Jr, Charles Luther Manson, and Michael Brunner, but now a fresh branch of his family tree has been exposed.

Maddox revealed to People that she began recording herself following the discovery as a means of coping, while her relationship with her own father became increasingly strained.

She explained to the publication: "What began as a way to process a shocking family discovery became a deeper investigation into generational trauma, identity, and whether we're destined to repeat the stories we inherit.

"Ultimately, I hope the film reminds people that while we can't choose where we come from, we can choose what we do with that history."

Manson and his followers were convicted of murdering the then-pregnant actress Sharon Tate, wife of director Roman Polanski, alongside two other individuals during a killing spree spanning two nights in 1969. He was subsequently found guilty of two additional murders, with the crimes sending shockwaves throughout America.

The Manson Family, as his cult became known, achieved infamy for their savage offences, which remain etched in the American collective memory to this day.

He passed away in 2017 at the age of 83 following four decades behind bars.
