Dave Kendall, known and loved as the host of MTV's 120 Minutes, has died. Confirming the news on Tuesday, Kendall's successor on the show, Matt Pinfield, shared a tribute on X. "Heartbroken to hear about the passing of Dave Kendall," he began. "Dave was one of the true believers. Long before alternative music found its way into the mainstream, he was there every week on 120 Minutes, introducing people to bands that would go on to define an era. He didn't just host a show. He gave a home to music that deserved to be heard.

"He loved the music, respected the artists, and connected with fans in a way that always felt authentic. That's a rare gift. Sending love to everyone whose life he touched. Rest easy, Dave."

Pinfield did not disclose Kendall's age, nor his cause of death.

Kendall, who was born in Britain, rose to prominence in the 80s after producing MTV's 120 minutes, a music video show spotlighting alternative bands and artists. Following the show's launch in 1986, Kendall took on hosting duties in 1989, before departing in 1992.

According to Deadline, in his final years, Kendall worked as a freelance music writer and as a correspondent for the Bangkok Post. He also appeared on SiriusXM.

Following the news of the MTV star's passing, tributes have poured in from fans on social media. "Dave Kendall brought more freaks and outcasts together via 120 Minutes than he could ever be given credit for. Rest in peace to a true giant of alternative music," wrote one.

"RIP Dave Kendall, creator of 120 Minutes on MTV. I owe him immeasurably for introducing me to so much of the music that changed my life. 120 Minutes debuted in 1986 when I was 19. Just what I needed just when I needed it the most," added another.

Meanwhile, a third tweeted: "Kendall offered an amazing weekly trip through alternative music to Gen X when most radio insisted on its standard diet of the usual. What a favour. He expanded our world."
