Saga has recently analysed the islands in Europe’s archipelagos to find the best of the best for a summer holiday They took key holiday factors like weather, food and green spaces to find where makes the best island break - and surprisingly, the winner isn’t any of the Greek islands.

Greece has long been favoured by British tourists, but this year’s winning island is Tenerife in the Canary Islands.

Tenerife is the largest island in the archipelago, off the coast of West Africa.

The island scored an impressive score of 95/100 due to its mixture of beautiful natural scenery, fresh food, and – its highest scoring metric – incredible sunshine.

Tenerife averages a whopping 3,000 hours of sunshine a year and the highest daylight hours. This makes it perfect for a summer holiday, spending long days on the beach.

It’s got more than just beaches to offer, though. Although Tenerife does boast some truly stunning coastal locations like the Playa del Duque, there’s also jaw-dropping forests and a rich cultural history.

For a break from the sea and sand, take a drive to the Anaga laurel forests. This highland mountain forest is filled with sharp peaks, deep ravines and a magical canopy of laurel trees.

Dotted throughout the forest are charming hamlets.

One of these is Tagana, a quiet village built into the mountainside. The town is still true to Tenerife’s traditional customs and architecture.

It’s also home to one of the oldest churches on the island - Nuestra Señora de las Nieves.

With so much to explore, and so many places to see it’s not hard to see why Tenerife has shot to the top of the list.
