Packing for a holiday abroad often means throwing everyday essentials into a suitcase without a second thought. However, anyone travelling to Mexico is being warned that one item commonly used in the UK could be seized by customs officials on arrival.
The warning relates to vapes and electronic cigarettes, which are subject to some of the world's toughest restrictions in Mexico. While vaping products remain legal in the UK, Mexican authorities prohibit travellers from bringing e-cigarettes, vaping devices and refill solutions into the country.
According to the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), it is illegal to bring e-cigarettes, vaping devices and vaping solutions into Mexico or to buy and sell them once there. The government says customs officials can confiscate the items and travellers could also face a fine or detention.
Mexico's National Customs Agency (ANAM) also lists electronic cigarettes, personal vaporising devices and similar products among the goods that cannot be brought into the country. The restrictions apply to nicotine and non-nicotine devices, as well as heated tobacco products and similar systems, according to the agency.
The rules form part of Mexico's wider crackdown on vaping products. According to Mexico's health regulator COFEPRIS, the government introduced the measures to protect public health, citing concerns over the potential risks associated with electronic cigarettes and vaping devices.
Travellers should also be aware that smoking and vaping restrictions extend beyond the border. The FCDO says smoking or vaping in public places in Mexico can result in fines of up to 3,000 Mexican pesos (around £150), depending on the circumstances.
The advice serves as a reminder that items considered perfectly legal in the UK are not necessarily permitted overseas. Holidaymakers are therefore encouraged to check local customs rules before packing to avoid delays, confiscation or potential penalties when arriving in Mexico.
