90s rock legend Jennifer Finch has tragically died at 57, following a long cancer battle. The musician famously played the bass for American rock band L7, and it was the group that confirmed her death in an emotional post on Sunday (July 19). On Instagram, they stated: "With a very heavy heart, we announce that our beloved bandmate, friend, and fellow troublemaker Jennifer Finch has passed away today. She had a long, courageous fight with brain cancer and was loved by many wonderful friends, musical peers and fans worldwide. We love you, Jennifer.”
The band’s representative also shared a statement, which read: "We are shattered by the loss of our beloved bandmate, sister and friend Jennifer Finch, whose fierce spirit, humour and boundless creativity helped shape L7 and changed all of our lives forever." They added: "Jennifer was a true original who lived entirely on her own terms, and the impact she made on music, art and everyone lucky enough to know her cannot be measured.
"We love her beyond words and will carry her with us always. Rest in power, our dear friend," they concluded.
This sparked an overwhelming response from devastated fans, who took to the comments with tributes. One responded: "I'm so heartbroken, this is a huge loss. My deepest condolences to her family, friends and bandmates. Thank you for everything, Jennifer. You'll never be forgotten; fans over the entire world will love you eternally."
A second echoed: "Absolutely heartbreaking. I am so, so sorry. Sending all my love to the band and Jennifer’s family and friends."
Another emotional fan added: "I can't bear this news!!! F*** cancer so hard!!! I'm so sorry, L7. RIP Jenny!!"
"God bless her. An important fixture of the LA scene, a super cool person, a true artist with a kind and welcoming heart. I loved, respected and admired her greatly. She will be missed," penned a fourth.
Jennifer's shock death comes just five days after L7 revealed a GoFundMe page had been created after the musician was diagnosed with brain cancer.
They revealed that "unforeseen complication" required her to "undergo multiple surgeries that have resulted in physical limitations", and that she would be unable to join the group on the North American leg of their Last Hurrah Farewell tour, which is scheduled for later this year.
The bassist joined L7 in 1986, two years after the band formed in Los Angeles and remained one of its most recognisable members throughout the band's history, having played a key role during the band's rise in the late 1980s and early 1990s.
Alongside the bass, Jennifer was also a credited songwriter and photographer. She contributed to several of L7's most notable releases, including L7, Smell the Magic, Bricks Are Heavy, Hungry for Stink, and the reunion-era album Scatter the Rats.
She left the band in 1996, then returned when L7 reunited in 2014. Since then, Jennifer had remained part of the band's core lineup alongside Donita Sparks, Suzi Gardner and Dee Plakas.
