The son of a terrorist has launched a legal bid to return to the UK after reportedly fighting for Al Qaeda in Syria. Sufean Kamal, 31, is the son of Abu Hamza, an Egyptian-born Islamic cleric who is currently serving life in prison in the USA for a number of terrorism-related offences.

Kamal grew up in London but left for Syria in 2013, and British intelligence services have accused him of being involved with terrorist organisations such as Al Qaeda. They say he poses a continuous threat to national security, and he was stripped of his British citizenship by the Home Office in 2016. However, he has now launched a bid to return to the UK to be reunited with his wife and children.

His lawyers argue that the removal of his citizenship was illegal, and he is being denied his human rights to a family life. Kamal denies fighting for terrorist groups and claims to have fought alongside rebel militias, such as the Western-backed Free Syrian Army, to protect civilians oppressed by the Bashar al-Assad regime.

After his UK citizenship was revoked in 2016, authorities said: "Should Kamal return to the UK, we assess that there is a real risk that he would use his experience in Syria to assist UK-based Islamist extremists to engage in Islamist extremist activity."

In a hearing, Kamal said: "Taking away my citizenship has affected my family and me. I am not a terrorist."

It was heard that he tried to return to Britain in 2019 but was intercepted and arrested in Istanbul. Authorities in Turkey tried to deport him to Morocco, where his mother is from, but were unsuccessful.

His father, a former imam of the Finsbury Park Mosque in London, became notorious in the late 1990s and early 2000s for preaching violent jihad. He praised Osama Bin Laden and the 9/11 hijackers, and radicalised young men to fight in jihad.

Abu Hamza was arrested in the UK in 2004 before being convicted on 11 counts in 2006. He was jailed for eight years for charges including soliciting murder, inciting racial hatred, and possessing a terrorist handbook.

He was extradited to the USA in 2012 before being found guilty of 11 terrorism charges just two years later. He was jailed for providing advice to Yemeni militants who kidnapped 16 Western tourists, sending followers to Oregon to establish an Al Qaeda training facility, and financially supporting terrorist camps in Afghanistan.
