US President Donald Trump has sparked fury after he "hijacked" Spain's World Cup trophy lift on Sunday. Mr Trump, also joined by FIFA president Gianni Infantino, handed the trophy to Spain's Rodri after a deserved 1-0 extra-time win against Argentina.

The US president was seen next to the podium as Spain celebrated, but the Manchester City midfielder, as well as Infantino himself, appeared to gently guide him to the side of the stage. Mr Trump was still in shot when the World Cup was hoisted aloft but Spain, however, appeared to have used an edited photograph that only shows the player as they celebrated their second World Cup win on social media.

Trump also remained on the winners’ podium after handing the trophy to Chelsea’s Reece James after beating Paris St Germain, with match-winner Cole Palmer admitting he was “confused” by the situation.
