Kent Broadhurst, the American actor known for Law & Order, Léon, and Silver Bullet, has died. The on-screen star died aged 86 on May 20 at Calvary Hospital in the Bronx, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Born on February 4, 1940, in St. Louis, Missouri, Broadhurst was a beloved actor, playwright, screenwriter, and painter. Prior to launching his career, the budding performer studied at the University of Nebraska before moving to New York, where he managed to secure roles on Broadway, in theatre, and on screen. In a milestone moment for Broadhurst, he famously penned the screenplay for Wild Iris, a 2001 TV movie starring Gena Rowlands, Emile Hirsch and Laura Linney - the latter of whom received a Primetime Emmy Award for her performance.

Adding to his impressive, decade-spanning portfolio, Broadhurst appeared in numerous high-profile films. Among them, he co-starred with Paul Newman and Charlotte Rampling in The Verdict, as well as Silkwood, helmed by Meryl Streep, Kurt Russell and Cher.

As for his TV roles, Broadhurst featured in episodes of The Equalizer, Babylon 5, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, and Persons of Interest.

"Though often cast in supporting roles, he brought depth, restraint, and gravitas to every performance," noted his obituary.

"Friends and colleagues often described him as a Renaissance man—thoughtful, intellectually generous, and devoted to the arts in all their forms. A devoted New Yorker, Mr. Broadhurst lived for the past 63 years in the same Cornelia Street building in Greenwich Village. In a profession often dominated by celebrity, Kent Broadhurst remained something rarer: a dedicated working artist whose contributions quietly elevated every project he touched."

A man of many talents, Broadhurst was also a painter who worked on over 2,000 canvases. According to his obituary, the actor's work is expected to be exhibited at Broadhurst Art Gallery at the Stissing Center in Pine Plains, New York.
