Actor Vincent Pastore, best known for his role on The Sopranos, has died aged 80. The acting legend was found dead in his apartment in The Bronx, New York, on Saturday, August 1, by one of his neighbours, after not being heard from for three days.

After news of Pastore's passing was made public, his manager, Robert Atterman, said in a statement, "I had the privilege of representing Vinny for more than 30 years, long before The Sopranos made him a household name. To the world, he will always be remembered as the unforgettable ‘Big Pussy,’ but to those of us who knew him, he was so much more."

He continued: "He loved being an actor. He was passionate about his craft and was always encouraging, respectful, and generous with young actors, taking the time to offer guidance and support whenever he could," as he added losing Pastore was “deeply personal. Over more than three decades, I had the honour of watching not only his remarkable career but also the incredible person he was. I will miss his friendship, his loyalty, his humour, and his heart."

He ended his personal statement by saying: “My deepest condolences go out to his family, friends, colleagues, and the countless fans whose lives he touched.

“He leaves behind a legacy that extends far beyond his memorable performances. He will be greatly missed and never forgotten.”

He added: "Vinny was one of the kindest, most generous people I have ever known. “He treated everyone with warmth and respect, never turning down a fan who wanted a photograph or an autograph."

Police are said to be investigating his death, according to Deadline. Pastore initially gained recognition through supporting roles in gangster films such as Goodfellas and Men of Respect, before securing more substantial parts in 1995's The Jerky Boys: The Movie, and the HBO television film Gotti the following year.

In Gotti, he featured alongside Tony Sirico, Frank Vincent, and Dominic Chianese - all of whom would reunite as colleagues when he joined the cast of The Sopranos.

Pastore portrayed Tony Soprano's closest friend Salvatore 'Big P****' Bonpensiero in the series, who was infamously killed by Tony, Silvio and Paulie for being an FBI informant.

His other television work includes numerous appearances on Law & Order, alongside leading roles in programmes such as Hawaii Five-0 and Queen Supreme.

He also featured on several reality television programmes during the 2000s, including Celebrity Apprentice, Dancing With the Stars and Celebrity Fit Club.

Pastore is survived by his daughter Renee.
