Heavy rain and hail could hit parts of the UK on Wednesday following the final day of the latest heatwave. Amber and yellow heat health alerts are in effect across much of England until 9am Wednesday, with temperatures expected to reach more than 30C in some areas.

Low pressure, which has recently brought rainfall to Scotland, Northern Ireland and parts of northern England, will bring scattered showers and thunderstorms today (Tuesday) and into Wednesday. And while it will not suffice to alleviate the current drought, there is a chance of strong winds and even hail in some areas. Places that will see a heavy downpour are also at risk of flash flooding, as scorched ground could cause significant water runoff.

A Met Office weather forecast for Wednesday states: "Showers or longer spells of rain will continue across northern areas, with a risk of hail and thunder. Sunny spells elsewhere. Windy in the north, with temperatures nearer normal."

For Thursday to Saturday, the outlook says: "Temperatures are expected to decrease gradually in the second half of the week. A mixed few days to come, with sunny spells and scattered showers expected each day. Staying rather breezy, with a much cooler feel compared to of late."

It follows the driest July in England and Wales since records began. Parts of southern England may still not see ay rain, forecasters said. Hail is a phenomenon most common in summer months as it needs to develop inside towering cumulonimbus clouds, which are often spawned by intense heat at ground level.
