Several people have died after a mass shooting in a small town in North Carolina. The shooting happened at around 8.30am on Wednesday at a home on Brooks Road in the Prospect Hill area of Caswell County, according to the Caswell County Sheriff's Office.

Authorities have confirmed there were multiple fatalities, while one person was taken to hospital. Officials have not yet released the identities of those involved or confirmed the total number of victims. Speaking to local broadcaster WFMY, Caswell County Sheriff Tony Durden said there were "multiple fatalities" and one person remained in hospital. The sheriff said there are no outstanding suspects and stressed there is no ongoing threat to the public. "The community is safe," he said, adding that investigators believe it was "an isolated incident". The Caswell County Sheriff's Office is leading the investigation with assistance from the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation and the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.

Authorities have not released any information on whether anyone has been arrested in connection with the shooting.

Sheriff Durden declined to discuss a possible motive or say whether the shooting was linked to a domestic incident, telling reporters the investigation remains in its early stages.

Investigators are now gathering physical evidence and speaking to the surrounding community as they work to establish exactly what happened.

The sheriff also declined to say whether a weapon had been recovered.

He added that officers from the Caswell County Sheriff's Office, the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation and the North Carolina State Highway Patrol were working together at the scene.

Authorities were seen outside a home in the Prospect Hill area as officers continued to examine the scene throughout Wednesday.
