Rachel Reeves has hit out at "misogyny" amid criticism over her upcoming Budget. The Chancellor is expected to unveil more tax hikes in her major statement in the Commons tomorrow.

Speaking to backbench Labour MPs last night, Ms Reeves insisted she had been subjected to misogyny. She said: “I don’t think even I had recognised the misogyny that still exists in public life."

Sir Keir Starmer suggested Ms Reeves gets more abuse because she is a woman.

The Prime Minister: "I strongly believe that women in public life get much more criticism and abuse than men, and I mean that is in politics, but it's also across a number of other areas. I'd also say the media frankly.

"There's abuse and criticism of all politicians, but I'm acutely aware that women get much more abuse and criticism than men do and I think it's about time we acknowledge that."
