According to Prince Harry, his aunt Sarah Ferguson offered to give Meghan Markle a helping hand with one huge royal milestone before she married into the family. The Duke of Sussex revealed all about the historic moment in his bombshell 2023 memoir, Spare.
Harry gave a detailed account of the moment his then-girlfriend was preparing to meet his grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II, for the first time at Royal Lodge in Windsor, and revealed it was Sarah who stepped in to give her some advice.
He wrote: "Fergie came out, a little emotional, and asked, ‘Can you curtsy?’ Meg shook her head. Fergie then demonstrated, and Meg imitated her."
While this moment proved to be hugely significant for the couple who would go on to marry shortly afterwards at St George's Chapel in 2018, royal fans were left confused when Sarah was asked about the couple in 2023.
In an interview with The Telegraph, Fergie said: "I don't really know Meghan. I haven't really met her. I spoke to her at the funeral, and I thought she looked absolutely beautiful. I think she is beautiful.
"She has made Harry very happy, and that is so nice. Honestly, he's so happy with her. She really loves him. And I think that's beautiful – and that Diana would be proud of him and her lovely grandchildren."
Other details of Meghan's first meeting with Queen Elizabeth at Royal Lodge were recalled by Harry in his memoir, including the moment the future Duchess mistook Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor for a member of staff.
Harry wrote: “My uncle Andrew, seated beside her, holding her handbag, began to escort her out. After a moment, Meg asked me something about the Queen’s assistant. I asked who she was talking about.”
Meghan replied, “The man who walked her to the door.” Harry goes on to describe how she had confused the Queen's second son with one of the monarch's footmen, before adding: “She definitely hadn’t Googled us."
