Hollywood icon Heath Ledger died at the age of just 28 back in 2008 – and there’s a tragic reason his beloved daughter Matilda was left out of his will. The Brokeback Mountain star died from an accidental overdose of prescribed medications, and was found lying naked and face down in his bed by his housekeeper.
It wasn’t out of malice – just that the actor had written his will in 2003, two years before her birth, and never updated it afterwards. His father Kim Ledger was instead named as the administrator of the will and said at the time that Matilda “would be taken care of”.
However, Heath’s uncles claimed Kim had been removed as executor after being accused of gross mismanagement of his estate.
Regardless, the family eventually decided the entire estate would be gifted to Matilda, and it was put into trust for the young child.
They weren’t the only ones to help out, however. Johnny Depp, Colin Farrell and Jude Law all gave their earnings from their fantasy film The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus to Matilda, one of her father’s last posthumous appearances.
Film director Terry Gilliam described the gesture as “extraordinary and wonderful” at the time.
