Sara Cox has replaced Scott Mills on BBC Radio 2 Breakfast (Image: WireImage)

She's one of the hottest presenters on the airwaves, so it's no surprise that Sara Cox has landed the role as the new host of the nation's biggest radio show. She takes over from Scott Mills as the new host of BBC Radio 2 Breakfast, who was axed last month after a sex scandal involving an underage boy made the headlines. The 53-year-old presenter only held the position for just over 12 months before he was axed with immediate effect by BBC bosses.

The corporation later stated that he was let go after failing to disclose the teenager's age to the BBC during the 2018 police investigation into the scandal. Despite scandal and intrigue surrounding the prestigious hosting gig, like me, fans will be overjoyed to hear of Sara's promotion, which will start this summer, with 6.5 million eager listeners tuning in every week.

Sharing her excitement over her new position, the 51-year-old presenter admitted that she had always "dreamed" of landing a role on the beloved breakfast show. She gushed: "There are not enough adjectives to really sum up how I'm feeling about being trusted with such an iconic show, but let's start with ecstatic, honoured and incredibly chuffed."

Despite the nation celebrating her upcoming radio show, it has left many Strictly fans like me wondering what this could mean for the beloved reality show. The ballroom show is currently going through quite the makeover at the moment, following the departure of Tess Daly and Claudia Winkleman last Christmas.

Since their exit, TV execs have revealed several professional ballroom dancers have been given the boot, including long-standing favourite Karen Haur, as they prepare to introduce a wave of new talent on the show. But BBC bosses aren't just on the hunt for new dancers, they're also looking for the perfect hosting duo to succeed Tess and Claudia, who hosted the programme for 21 years.

For months, fans have been speculating over who could pick up the mantle on the glittering dance competition, and I, for one, had Sara Cox up there at the top of my list. But her new appointment on BBC 2 has thrown a curveball into those plans and has effectively withdrawn her interest from the presenting gig.

There's no way she could host a Monday-to-Friday breakfast show every week whilst also hosting Strictly Come Dancing every Saturday night. The poor woman would combust from stress and kill her social life.

Honestly, I think BBC bosses have missed a trick. She would have been perfect as the new host on the show after being a lifelong fan and a previous contestant - who can forget that 2017 Christmas special?

Strictly fans already know and adore her, so she would have instantly put fears about this new generation of the show to ease and brought back some of the much-needed trust the programme needs right now.

If there's any way that Sara can juggle her new breakfast gig, the presenting gig on Strictly, whilst also being a loving mum to her three children, then we'd be overjoyed. But unfortunately, I think even the strongest woman in the world would struggle to cope with that workload.

So, for now, I think this means Sara won't be returning to the BBC ballroom any time soon. I'll certainly be interested to see who they appoint as the new Strictly hosts instead later this year.
