Pop legend Britney Spears has been charged with driving under the influence following an incident in California in March, it has been revealed. According to various reports, the 44-year-old Toxic singer will be facing criminal charges. Ventura County prosecutors have charged the American hitmaker with one count of misdemeanour driving under the influence. She is due to be arraigned at Ventura County Superior Court on Monday morning. Ventura County District Attorney's office said Spears will be offered a "wet reckless" which allows a charged person to plead guilty to reckless driving involving drugs or alcohol. According to records, the Circus singer was pulled over by officers on March 4.

The emergency dispatch audio revealed Spears was driving a black BMW 2026 convertible, with the 911 operator describing the vehicle “erratically braking, swerving and driving with no taillight".

Spears was arrested by the California Highway Patrol, taken into custody, and released hours later.

Her representative said in a statement at the time: “This was an unfortunate incident that is completely inexcusable. Britney is going to take the right steps and comply with the law and hopefully this can be the first step in long overdue change that needs to occur in Britney’s life.

"Hopefully, she can get the help and support she needs during this difficult time.

“Her boys are going to be spending time with her. Her loved ones are going to come up with an overdue needed plan to set her up for success for well being.”

The star's car was towed away and impounded, and according to TMZ, she expressed remorse as a source claimed she was "crying a lot" while at the Ventura County Sheriff's Office.

Earlier in April, her respresentative said Spears had checked herself into a treatment centre voluntarily.
