
A holiday destination dubbed the "Rome of the North" has been hailed as a "fairytale city" featuring historic buildings, spectacular mountains and flights available from just £15. Salzburg, in Austria, features a stunning historic Old Town which holds UNESCO World Heritage Site status, complete with medieval streets, delightful squares and striking architecture.
Wandering through its winding streets feels like stepping straight into a Disney film. It's an excellent holiday destination for a diverse range of visitors, from outdoor enthusiasts to music lovers and history enthusiasts. The city is situated right beside the Alps, providing holidaymakers with access to skiing and snowboarding routes, as well as hiking and mountain biking trails, reports Daily Star.

The surrounding lakes, including Lake Wolfgang and Lake Fuschl, are favoured spots for water sports and relaxing boat cruises. Meanwhile, Hohensalzburg Fortress, perched atop the Festungsberg hill, provides sweeping views across the city and surrounding landscape.
A visitor shared details of their trip to Salzburg on TikTok. Emma Cooke, posting as @petite.blondine, claims she secured a flight from the UK to the "fairytale" destination for just £8.99 with Wizz Air. At the time of writing, the cheapest flight to Salzburg from UK airports cost £15.
She claims she utilised the "Wizz app with Wizz Discount Club" and noted: "They've loads on from now until mid summer." Emma describes the city as "super walkable" with a "famous shopping street" and stunning cathedrals and abbeys.

Emma also suggested sampling "Michelin recommended schnitzel" at Meissl and Shadn for under £30.
The city boasts numerous attractions, with various museums including Mozart's Birthplace and Mozart's Residence. Salzburg also plays host to the world-renowned Salzburg Festival, amongst the most celebrated classical music events globally.
The beloved film 'The Sound of Music' was also shot in and around the city. Enthusiasts can explore filming locations such as the Mirabell Gardens, Nonnberg Abbey, and the village of Mondsee.
The Mirabell Palace and Gardens, featuring their pristine lawns, fountains, and sculptures, provide an ideal spot to enjoy coffee while admiring the beautiful town, as does Residenzplatz, an impressive square surrounded by historic architecture.
Café Tomaselli, established in 1705, stands as one of Austria's oldest coffeehouses and remains popular for its delicious pastries. The city offers an abundance of bars and clubs to suit all tastes, from intimate taverns pouring locally crafted ales to fashionable cocktail lounges and nightspots featuring live music and dancing.
Hangar-7, situated close to Salzburg Airport, is a stylish venue renowned for its electronic music events. Meanwhile, Augustiner Bräustübl is essential for beer enthusiasts, being one of Austria's most historic breweries, set within a former monastery – patrons drink enormous pints from stone jugs which they can refill directly from the taps.
Beer gardens are cherished here in the UK, and during the summer months, visitors can unwind in them throughout Salzburg as well. There are also numerous restaurants where guests can savour regional specialities such as schnitzel, strudel, and Mozartkugel (a chocolate praline named after Mozart). Late-night eateries serving kebabs and pizza are also readily available for those making their way home.
