Temperatures across the UK are set to fall below the mid-May average as arctic air is set to hit the country, according to latest forecast.

Cold air will hit the UK on Tuesday and Wednesday this week (May 12 and 13) and temperatures will drop. Many areas, especially Scotland, the north of England and the south east of England, will have temperatures ranging from 9 to 14C, falling short of the mid-May average of 12-17C, the BBC reported. But the air coming from northern Scandinavia and the Arctic circle, the BBC also added, will mean temperatures will be 3 to 7C below average.

The Met Office forecast for the rest of this week confirmed weather will remain changeable. On Tuesday, "rain in the north gradually clear south through the day. Sunny spells following with scattered showers in the north and northwest. Feeling chilly, especially in the brisk northerly breeze," the forecast said.

From Wednesday to Friday, "blustery with sunny spells and heavy showers on both Wednesday and Thursday. More settled on Friday with drier and brighter conditions. Remaining chilly throughout with a risk of overnight frost," it also said.

Other forecast from WXCharts.com also said forecast cold weather arriving on Tuesday, with snow and low temperatures.

Snowfall is expected to begin at 12pm on Tuesday (May 12) and continue until 12am on Thursday (May 14), according to this forecast. Maps show it starting in the Grampians at lunchtime, before spreading into west and east Scotland (Aberdeen, Fort William) by the evening.

By midnight, the West Coast of Scotland and northern England (Dumfries, Kendal, Blackpool) could see snow. On Wednesday morning, central Scotland, South-east Scotland (Berwick), north England (Manchester, York, Hull), and north Wales (Conwy) will also receive a coating of the white stuff.

The rest of Wednesday is forecast to see scattered showers in central Scotland, north Scotland (Wick, Inverness), and North-west England. During this period, rain will fall across most of the UK, heaviest on Wednesday afternoon.

According to these forecast, the North of England is forecast to see temperatures between 3C and 12C; the Midlands will be between 5C and 13C; the South of England will be between 6C and 15C; Wales will be between 4C and 10C; and Northern Ireland will be between 4C and 10C.
