Rod Stewart has praised his wife Penny Lancaster after she received the Freedom Of The City Of London accolade. Penny was awarded on Monday (May 11) at London's Guildhall for work as a City of London Police special constable, and for her charity work with multiple places including The King's Foundation, the Lowe Syndrome Trust, UK Care of Police Survivors, and Royal National Institute of Blind People.

And after witnessing his wife get the incredible award, he issued a statement and even gave an emotional eight-word confession as he admitted to the Press Association: "I don't know what she sees in me". He added: "I’m just a mere knight of the realm, but no it’s well deserved.

"She has a heart of gold, and keeps me in order, and anybody who can keep me in order deserves an honour."

Penny expressed her gratitude for the award as she went on to explain that she originally saw policing as "another extension of my charity work", and believed at first that it was just her giving back. However, she said that what she has received in return is "tenfold".

She added: "Particularly on the subject of keeping women and children safe on the streets, that was a big priority of mine, and I will forge forward with that, so it’s definitely up there with one of the most important roles of my life, other than being married to Rod and having children."

Rod noted that he was originally nervous when his wife told him she wanted to join the police, but then when she said she wanted to protect the City of London, he thought it was "marvellous".

Penny's award comes days after she was finally able to return to duty after an injury. She had previously had to take a break from policing and was unsure when she could return, however she made her first day back extra special by returning on the day of the London Marathon, which she said had been "emotional and empowering" as well as "inspirational".

She was praised at the time of the post for her involvement as one user wrote: "Thank you for your service to us all and for keeping us safe in the city." While another added: "You are amazing, keep doing you! A fantastic role model for women of all ages." A fourth wrote: "Super woman and the biggest inspiration."
