A Brexit row has erupted between the Labour rivals vying to oust Sir Keir Starmer. Supporters of Andy Burnham have accused Wes Streeting of trying to derail his bid to return to Westminster by raising the issue. The former health secretary said over the weekend that he wanted to see Britain back in the EU.
But supporters of the Greater Manchester Mayor are said to be furious with Mr Streeting as they believe it is a deliberate attempt to raise the issue in the leave-voting constituency of Makerfield where he is set to stand in the upcoming by-election.
Mr Burnham said there was a “long-term case” for returning to the bloc, but insisted he was not campaigning on that in the by-election.
