Beartooth frontman Caleb Shomo has publicly come out as gay in a heartfelt statement shared with fans, while his wife of nearly 14 years, Fleur Shomo, has publicly expressed her support despite describing this as a "hurtful" and "disorienting" period for her. The musician, 33, who initially gained prominence with metalcore outfit Attack Attack! before forming Beartooth, revealed his sexuality in a frank Instagram post over the weekend. Caleb wrote: "There's been a lot of speculation surrounding my personal life as of late and I feel compelled to set the record straight before it affects those I love any further.
"I am a proudly gay man. This is something I've been unpacking and reckoning with in my life for quite some time now." The rocker acknowledged that suppressing his sexuality for years had exacted a significant emotional toll, and disclosed he spent much of the past decade attempting to numb his feelings. I spent a decade burying feelings with alcohol," he explained, adding that giving up drinking enabled him to begin examining "why I felt this way for so long", reports the Mirror.
Caleb continued: "It's been a direct path to me reconciling with my sexuality in hopes that it will eventually lead to me experiencing self love."
The musician also disclosed that his forthcoming music will mirror what he is going through in this new phase of his life, and pledged to fans he plans to express himself more authentically than ever before. He wrote: "I will only do what makes me happy at the deepest level and what is the most honest depiction of who I am." This revelation marks a watershed moment for the singer, whose music has delved into themes of self-loathing, mental health battles, and emotional turmoil since 2014.
Caleb's wife Fleur, whom he wed in April 2012, has also posted her own heartfelt statement online, acknowledging that the past few months have been extraordinarily painful.
"But I will always want to love, protect and support Caleb," she wrote. "I have cared more about his well being over the years than anything else in the world." She added: "You never want anything more for your person than for them to just be ok.
"You also ask yourself constantly if you're a bad person for wondering wtf this means for your world and the anger you also feel. To support him whilst losing everything has been incredibly hard to figure out."
She went on: "Our nearly 14 years of marriage was wonderful and full of so much fun, adventure and love. Nobody will know anything about our marriage like we do.
"And no one can ever truly know what depths of love exist between two people unless they are those people. I already miss it and my husband more than anything. Our story was a good one. And now it's done." The couple do not have any children together.
