Temperatures are expected to climb even further on Tuesday which will likely reignite the age-old debate of at what point is it too hot to work. There is currently no guidance on the maximum temperature limit — in other words, when it is too hot to work — but employers must stick to health and safety at work law, the Government says.

This includes keeping the temperature at a comfortable level and providing clean and fresh air.

Employees are encouraged to speak to their employer if the workplace temperature is uncomfortable.

The provisional 34.8C recorded on Monday also represents the all-time hottest meteorological spring temperature and bank holiday Monday, surpassing the 33.3C set on the August Bank Holiday in 2019.

Previously, the hottest May day was 32.8C reached in 1922 and 1944.

Temperature records are typically broken by just tenths of a degree and the Met Office is warning more records could be set on Tuesday.

The expected high for large parts of England and Wales is a boiling 35C, which could climb to 36C, according to senior meteorologist Becky Mitchell.

Those forecasts span the Midlands, the south-east and south-west England, East Anglia, and South Wales.

Potential thunderstorms in the afternoon could affect how much the mercury rises, the Met Office added.

It comes as the country experienced a “tropical night” on Monday, as the record for the highest daily minimum temperature in May was also broken for the second consecutive day.

Temperatures did not fall below 21.3C on Monday at Kenley Airfield, south London.

The previous meteorological spring temperature record was topped on the Bank Holiday in 12 different locations, ranging from Suffolk to Berkshire to Warwickshire.
