An iconic steakhouse that has welcomed diners through its doors for 24 years has announced the closure of its original restaurant. Sophie's Steakhouse will serve the last steaks at its US-style grill in Fulham Road, Chelsea, on Saturday (May 30).
The eatery welcomed its first customers in 2002 when childhood pals, Rupert Power and Sophie Bathgate, launched the venue. Sophie's Steakhouse went on to open branches in Covent Garden and Soho. The Soho branch is still open. Mr Power, announcing the closure in Chelsea in a Facebook post, said: "I've never been one to leave a party early, but this Saturday... will be our last service and we will be closing our doors on the Fulham Road in Chelsea for the last time."
He said as the lease on its premises was coming to an end it was the right time to make the "hard" decision.
Mr Power added: "I want to say to our loyal customers, our independent suppliers and of course our team both past and present, who by day by day, by and large, make this a really happy place."
The businessman went on to wish the new occupants well as he expressed a hope the area would rediscover its previous identity.
He went on to say the Soho branch will continue and that as one door closes, another will open.
In response to the post there was an outpouring of affection from diners, including one who posted: "Oh no. So many incredible experiences and memories here. Truly in shock."
Another replied: "Very sorry to hear that, Rupert, but you had a great innings and it was an amazing place."
A third said: "All great things often do come to an end. So many incredible memories made, and of course meeting my husband was a highlight. Thank you for the most fun I had during my 20s!"
The eatery was hailed for being the "genteel face of steak eating" by food critic Grace Dent in a restaurant review published by the Guardian.
Dishes singled out for praise by MasterChef's new co-host included corn ribs, crispy squid and smoked mackerel paté.
Sophie's Steakhouse & Bar said the story will continue in Soho and it hopes to still see customers from its former Chelsea branch there.
