One of the UK's last ancient temperate rainforests has been named among Europe's most magical forest walks this summer. Wistman's Wood, located in Dartmoor, came third on the list with its secluded setting, 500-year-old dwarf oak trees and woodland landscapes.
The travel experts at Avis have looked at European forests that remain under-the-radar, while analysing search demand, social media presence, estimates of the oldest trees, and distance from the nearest airports. Topping their list was Perućica Rainforest in Bosnia and Herzegovina, followed closely by Spain's Otzarreta Forest. While Wistman's Wood was the only UK spot, it's clear why this stunning spot made its way on the list.
Just 31 miles from Exeter Airport, Wistman's Wood is located perfectly for those visiting Devon.
The woodland's stunning 500-year-old dwarf oaks have been contorted into ancient, mossy forms by centuries of Atlantic exposure, pushing through a floor of lichen-covered granite boulders.
With 18,100 monthly searches and just 5,000 Instagram posts, it feels more like a hidden relic than a conventional woodland, rewarding visitors who prefer atmosphere, folklore and wild landscapes over polished viewpoints.
Taking to Tripadvisor one recent visitor to the woodland wrote: "Stunning ancient woodland that will make you feel like you are in a fairytale. A must-visit place. A lovely and easy walk from a small car park opposite the Two Bridges Hotel.
"The woodland is hidden in the fields, you cannot see it from the main road. It roughly takes 1 hour to reach it from the car park. We visited in autumn on a rainy day, and still, it was magical. This is one of the most unique woodlands you can find in the UK."
While another added: "The wood was fun, the lichen hung like Hagrid's beard. The sights were astonishing and we saw loads of cows and sheep. I would recommend it to everybody."
