Seeing the new Mr and Mrs Phillips emerge from the quiet Gloucestershire church where they married on Saturday, entirely unfazed by the pouring rain, was a testament to just how far the Royal Family has come in recent years.

Rather than any questions about senior royals refusing to attend or any restrictions in place, the Firm was out in full force to welcome Harriet into the family and support Peter as he gets his second chance at happiness.

Just look back at King Charles’s marriage to Queen Camilla in 2005. He was the heir to the throne, so the stakes were incomparably higher, but he faced enormous resistance and married his true love without his mother by his side because of how deeply her Christian faith resided within her.

While the late Queen attended the religious blessing after the civil ceremony, the hurdles placed in his and Camilla's way seemed insurmountable at the time.

By attending his nephew’s second wedding, the extent to which the King has helped modernise attitudes around royal divorce and inclusivity spoke volumes. His attendance wasn't only about familial love, but about completely rewriting the royal rulebook.

The irony, of course, is that three out of Queen Elizabeth II’s four children are divorced, and there is a litany of examples from across the years about fears that divorce would threaten the Crown’s moral authority.

Take Princess Margaret’s relationship with divorced father-of-two, Group Capt Peter Townsend, the King’s own separation from Diana, Princess of Wales, or the split of Peter Phillips’ parents, Princess Anne and Capt Mark Phillips.

Each scandal shook the rafters, but today, divorce doesn’t have the same weight in royal circles – we live in times more governed by kindness and harmony, thanks largely to generational change within the Royal Family and society as a whole.
