The world's longest flight will take 20 hours, landing in London, and is set to be in action in the next few years.

The Qantas flight will mean passengers can ditch long stop-overs from Sydney to London and New-York in plans they unveiled almost eight years ago.

As the flight to the popular city to England's capital will take over 20 hours, when launched it will become the world's longest non-stop passenger flight.

The first route is now expected towards the end of 2027, after the initial 2025 launch was delayed due to technical issues and pandemic related delays.

It hasn't been confirmed whether the first flight will land in London or New York.

The first Airbus A350-1000ULR destined for Qantas' Project Sunrise routes just completed its inaugural test flight.

The plane took off from Toulouse and flew for three hours and 43 minutes over France and the French Atlantic Coast, not even a quarter of the long journeys it will have ahead.

Following the success of this test, a two month timing period is due to commence with airline Qantas expected to announce the first Project Sunrise route and timing at the end of this month.

The world's longest flight currently is operated by Singapore Airlines, and is their direct flight from Singapore to New York. This covers around 15,300 kilometres in roughly 18.5 hours.

The current Perth to London flight, operated by Qantas, takes 17.5 hours and is the world’s third longest, while the 17-hour Perth to Paris route and the 16-hour Melbourne to Dallas flight follow close behind.

The Sydney to London route will therefore surpass them all, covering 17,015 kilometres in around 20 hours.

Qantas has named it Project Sunrise due to the fact passengers on board a single flight will witness two sunrises.

Project Sunrise will also see a direct 18-hour flight from Sydney to New York launched. It is not yet clear which journey will take off first.

Qantas have made adaptions in order to make the mega-long 20 hour flight comfortable for passengers.

There will be 12 brand-new Airbus A350-1000s for the London and New York services, reducing the usual capacity of 300 travellers to 238 to create extra legroom and make space for ‘wellness zones’ between economy and premium sections.

These will include on-screen exercise programs, stretch handles and hydration stations.

Those in first class will also be able to enjoy both an armchair and a bed, plus sliding doors, private wardrobe and storage, and a 32” HD screen.

First class passengers will also be able to control mood lighting, temperature and even the humidity.
