A five-year-old child in India was allegedly kidnapped and raped while returning home on a motorbike with her grandfather. In a horrifying incident reported from Ballia district in Uttar Pradesh, the young girl was snatched by an accused man while her grandfather had briefly stopped near a cold storage facility along Bansdih Road on June 11. The grandfather had stepped away momentarily to use the toilet, leaving the child on the motorbike.

According to police, 29-year-old Chandan Kumar Shah allegedly arrived on another motorbike, grabbed the five-year-old, and fled the scene. The girl’s father immediately filed a complaint, triggering swift action by local authorities. Police rescued the child within hours of the abduction. A medical examination later confirmed that she had been sexually assaulted.

Authorities registered a case against Shah under Section 65(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for rape, along with strict provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, which provides enhanced safeguards for minors.

Station House Officer Vansh Bahadur Singh confirmed the rapid rescue operation. The accused was arrested on Saturday near the Dubhad–Dhelahwa Baba route, and the motorbike used in the crime was seized as key evidence. This fast response by police has been noted, though the brutality of the attack on such a young child has left the family and local community in shock.

This case has drawn renewed attention to the vulnerability of children, even when accompanied by family members. It underscores how quickly everyday routines can turn tragic in isolated moments. The incident has caused widespread distress among residents in the area, with many parents expressing heightened fears for their daughters’ safety while travelling locally.

Just months earlier, another disturbing case emerged from Baghpat in Uttar Pradesh. In March, a man named Deepak was detained for allegedly raping a 19-year-old woman after offering her and her two younger sisters — aged six and 12 — a lift home from an Eid fair.

According to the complaint, Deepak locked the younger girls inside the vehicle before driving the teenager to a remote spot. The victim reported being threatened with a weapon and warned against resistance.

It took two days for the sisters to confide in their mother, after which the family reported the matter. A case was registered under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, and investigations continued following his arrest.

These back-to-back incidents in the same state have intensified public concern and calls for stronger preventive measures, better patrolling in vulnerable areas, and faster judicial processes.

India has long struggled with a reputation for the safety of women and girls, frequently featuring in global conversations and reports on gender-based violence. Data from the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) shows the country records tens of thousands of rape cases each year, including a significant number involving minors.
