The Met Office has issued a series of amber weather warnings for the UK, with a scorching 34C heatwave set to blast into the country. A 46-hour amber alert for extreme heat has been issued for 51 areas across England and Wales, with forecasters warning the sweltering conditions could have widespread impacts on people, transport networks and critical infrastructure.

The warning comes into force at 1am on Monday, June 22, and remains in place until 11.59pm on Tuesday, June 23, as temperatures are expected to climb into the mid-30Cs across parts of the country. Some urban areas could even struggle to cool down overnight, with temperatures staying above 20C. In its latest update, the Met Office warned: "Following very warm weather on Sunday, very high temperatures are expected on Monday and Tuesday and will likely bring widespread impacts to people and infrastructure." It added: "In addition to high daytime maxima, temperatures overnight will remain very warm, especially in larger urban areas, and it will also feel humid."
