King Charles has paid tribute to his late father, the Duke of Edinburgh, on Father's Day by sharing a throwback photo of the father and son.

The snap shows Prince Philip proudly standing beside his son, Charles, as he receives his wings at RAF Cranwell in Lincolnshire on August 20, 1971. The Duke was Marshal of the Royal Air Force at the time, an honour that Queen Elizabeth II later bestowed on her oldest son.

A message accompanying the photo read: "Celebrating all Fathers, and thinking of those who wish they could be with their Dads, today."

Royal fans were quick to comment on the photo and wish the King a Happy Father's Day. He has two sons, Prince William, 44, and Prince Harry, 41.

One person wrote: "Happy Father's Day, Your Majesty. I know your late father would have been so very proud of you today."

Another said: "Beautiful photo, Happy fathers day." While a third user wrote: "Happy fathers day King Charles."

The King spent some time in the Royal Air Force before embarking on a career in the Royal Navy.
