Travel expert Simon Calder issued a warning to those travelling by train as the Met Office have issued red extreme heat warnings. Speaking remotely to ITV's flagship breakfast show Good Morning Britain, he said: "My advice to anybody booked to travel by rail over the next few days is, please, if you can move your journey to the end of the week, then do so. It will be much more comfortable and have a higher degree of actually working as it is supposed to. Otherwise, I'm afraid, just be prepared for delays and disruption."

Rail passengers have already been told to travel only if it's absolutely essential, with significant delays and disruption expected. The grim warnings come as the country braces for some of the highest temperatures on record. Presenter Ranvir Singh announced: "Forecasters have issued what's called a red extreme heat warning for areas including Cardiff, London, and Birmingham from tomorrow morning as Britain braces for the hottest June since 1976."

Forecasters have predicted potentially record-breaking June temperatures alongside unusually high humidity levels.

Temperatures are expected to climb to 37C on Tuesday June 23. The peak of the heatwave is forecast for Wednesday and Thursday, when some areas could see highs of 38C, potentially breaking the current UK June temperature record of 35.6C.

However, weather maps suggest a major pattern change could arrive shortly afterwards.
