The best place to shop for groceries is always up for debate; customers have spoken out to share their favourite, and it is not Tesco or Morrisons.

When it comes to your supermarket of choice, everyone has their own opinion, and it can be quite a personal decision.

It comes down to three main things: your preferences, cost and distance.

In a thread on Reddit, titled "What is overall the best supermarket chain in the UK?", customers have shared their thoughts on the best supermarket. It added: "I'm talking about the quality/price ratio. M&S has really nice quality food (in my opinion), but it is a bit on the expensive side. Which chain balances this best?"

One said: "I think it's different for everyone. Depending on what you buy, and where you live, the right' supermarket for you is different. For us, Tesco wins out. Morrisons was shockingly expensive, M&S and Lidl are too small, and Aldi has appalling quality fruit and veg. Sainsbury's and ASDA aren't bad, but Tesco is closer.

Another added: "We recently switched to Ocado/M&S and the quality is way better than our previous, Asda. If we shop smart, it's about 10% more than Asda, but it's worth it. We get it delivered of course, and we've had 4 or 5 shops from them with zero substitutions, unheard of with any of the supermarkets we've tried."

In a survey undertaken by Which?, it found that for a fifth year running, Marks & Spencer is the top-rated supermarket.

A customer said: "It's a lovely place to shop, high-quality products and excellent customer service.' Another added: 'It's the best place for high-quality produce and never lets me down."

In its review of the high street favourite, Which? said: "M&S is once again the best supermarket for shopping in-store — making it an impressive five years running at the top of our table.

"Shoppers love its beautifully presented stores, the quality and range of its groceries and its first-class customer service.

"But what they don’t love is its value for money. Still, that doesn’t seem to dent shoppers’ overall satisfaction.

"M&S has had a torrid year, with a cyber attack in April 2025 that almost wiped out its half-yearly profits, leaving shelves bare and shoppers unable to buy online for months.

"So it’s a testament to M&S’s reputation that none of this seems to have affected its standing among grocery shoppers.

"Looking ahead, it has plans to open dozens of new stores over the next two years with a focus on larger sites to attract more families."
