
Hip Hop pioneer Sparky D, real name Doreen Broadnax, has died at the age of 61. Her family announced her death in a statement. The Okayplayer Instagram page also confirmed the news in an emotional post. Alongside a picture of the star, they wrote: "We are saddened to announce the passing of MC Sparky D, also known as Doreen C. Broadnax, a pioneering MC whose fearless lyricism helped establish women as formidable voices in hip-hop.
"One of hip-hop’s earliest prominent female battle rappers, Sparky D earned widespread respect for her sharp delivery, competitive spirit, and commanding presence on the mic. She is best remembered for her pivotal role in the legendary Roxanne Wars, including her iconic response record 'Sparky’s Turn (Roxanne, You’re Through),' a defining moment that cemented her place in rap history and helped elevate the visibility of women in battle rap....Her impact extends far beyond her recordings. MC Sparky D helped carve out space for generations of women in rap, proving their voices belonged at the forefront of the culture. We extend our deepest condolences to her family, friends, and loved ones. Rest In Peace, MC Sparky D."
The star had a difficult life. She stated in interviews that she was a victim of domestic abuse and struggled with a crack cocaine addiction, which she said started because of her then-boyfriend. "Being that he was my boyfriend, I wanted to do it," she said in a 2022 interview with Live @...Radio.
"He never pressured me. A lot of girls do it because their boyfriends do it you know and then they get hooked. Just say no. Addiction is real addiction is real...and going down that life it's terrible. It's a dark place a dark, dark place," she said.
She was a key player in hip-hop’s golden age feud "The Roxanne Wars". She arrived on the scene in 1985 with the track Sparky's Turn (Roxanne You're Through)” The track criticised rapper Roxanne and her track, Roxanne’s Revenge,”which was itself an "answer song"
In 2017, the public was reminded of this battle when Netflix released a Shanté biopic, Roxanne, Roxanne. She was portrayed by Cheryse Dyllan in the flick.
Tributes flooded in for the star as fans learned the sad news. Writingon Instagram one penned: "Rest in peace to Sparky D, a true pioneer of hip-hop. Before female MCs were getting the respect and spotlight they deserved, she stepped to the mic with confidence, skill, and fearlessness during one of hip-hop’s most legendary eras. ]
"Her role in the Roxanne Wars wasn’t just a moment — it was history. She helped prove that women could battle, command attention, and leave a permanent mark on the culture. Much respect to a trailblazer whose name should never be forgotten."
Another added: "Wow RIP Sparky D ……. The first time I ever jump a turnstile on Sutter Ave LL back in the day If you know you know !!!!’ A real Brownsville native."
A third chimed in: "Condolences. I remember Sparky D 7 those battles. She gave Roxanne a run 4the money she was not a #YES person so they shelved her no contract - couldn’t control her #warrior."
