US president Donald Trump has sparked further health concerns after suffering a series of worrying incidents, broadcast by news channels, while attending the NATO summit in Turkey. In one clip shown on Fox News following his arrival Turkey’s leader Recep Erdogan greets Trump who appears to wander off unaware of where he is supposed to be, despite the fact there was a microphone set up for the pair to greet the press. Erdogan grabbed his hand to pull him back in the correct direction. In another clip broadcast later that day, Trump appears to fall asleep as he and Erdogan sit opposite each other at a press conference. After about 40 seconds he seems to jolt awake while Erdogan carries on speaking.
Both incidents were shared on X where users branded them "embarrassing". One fumed: "Aww look! Grandpa has fallen fast asleep again. This time in front of the delegation from Turkey. Sleepy Don is a major embarrassment. How do you keep letting him out on his own like this?" "
Another raged: "For the umpteenth time he’s asleep at the wheel in the presence of foreign dignitaries. What a goddamn embarrassment this dilapidated old f**k is."
A third chimed in: "Dopey Donald can't keep his eyes open half the time these days. Falling asleep in front of other world leaders like a tired old dog. Embarrassing."
A fourth opined: "What a complete embarrassment of Donald Trump! Here’s Russian News covering how the Turkish president had to guide Donald Trump around like a dementia patient. Trump is a laughingstock on the world stage."
A fifth enquired: "What happened to not being an embarrassment..." Meanwhile a sixth quipped: "I always wonder why people correct him instead of just letting him wander off...that'd be funny."
President Trump commemorated the 250th anniversary of America's independence after storms prompted a roughly two-hour evacuation of the National Mall in Washington DC, with severe weather disrupting celebrations in several US cities.
But another storm was brewing after prominent Democrat Harry Sissons accused the 47th US president of "falling asleep" during celebrations.
He said: "Trump seen falling asleep during the fireworks in DC for America’s 250th. Incredibly embarrassing and concerning." Meanwhile, journalist Aaron Rupar mocked the president, saying: "Trump 'blinks' during the fireworks show in DC."
