Famed Welsh singer Bonnie Tyler was born Gaynor Hopkins (later Sullivan). She grew up in a four-bedroom council house in Skewen, Neath, alongside five siblings before being discovered by a talent scout in a South Wales nightclub in 1974, eventually changing her name to avoid confusion with Mary Hopkin.
Her iconic raspy voice developed after a 1976 surgery to remove vocal nodules. She ignored doctor's orders to remain silent, screaming out of frustration and permanently damaging her vocal cords. This unique rasp perfectly catalyzed her 1977 global breakthrough smash hit, It's a Heartache.
Partnering with producer Jim Steinman, she achieved legendary status with the 1983 chart-topper Total Eclipse of the Heart and the 1984 movie soundtrack hit Holding Out for a Hero. Decades later, she represented the UK at Eurovision in 2013 and was appointed an MBE in 2022.
Staying true to her roots, she lived in the beautiful seaside village of Mumbles on the Gower Peninsula. She and her husband, Robert Sullivan, had no children but possessed a massive global property portfolio, including 22 UK homes, a New Zealand farm, and an Algarve villa.
In June 2026, the 75-year-old singer suffered a major health emergency. Following an urgent appendix procedure, she was placed into a medically induced coma and remained very unwell in intensive care, with her family asking for privacy during this awful tragedy.
Her entire career trajectory shifted because of a purely accidental stumble. In 1974, a prominent London talent scout named Roger Bell visited a Welsh nightclub specifically intending to audition a male singer performing upstairs. By sheer lucky accident, Bell walked onto the wrong floor, heard Tyler singing instead, and signed her.
In 1982, after switching to CBS Records, she flew to New York to meet composer Jim Steinman. In a Riverside Drive law office, they listened to a live, piano-led demonstration of Total Eclipse of the Heart. The raw performance was so moving that it made her cry right at the desk.
Beyond her legendary '80s rock anthems, Tyler found massive success across Europe in the 1990s collaborating with German songwriter Dieter Bohlen. Later in her career, she took on a major patriotic honor by flying the flag to represent the UK at the Eurovision Song Contest in 2013.
