Prince George looked rather dapper as he attended Wimbledon today with his mother, father and younger sister. The young Prince, who is the eldest of William and Kate's children, sat with his family in the Royal Box to watch Jannik Sinner and Alexander Zverev face off in the gentlemen’s singles finals on Sunday, July 12.
The 12-year-old future king looked smart in a dark navy suit with a crisp, bright shirt and a striped tie. The attire was what we expect from a royal, even one who is still a child. However, some were surprised to see the smart, layered attire donned in such hot London weather.
The UK is in the midst of yet another heatwave, with temperatures in Wimbledon, South West London, reaching highs of 29C today. The tournament has been hit with high temperatures throughout as the UK grapples with a record-breaking hot summer. However, that did not stop the Royals dressing as expected.
But it is not necessarily the fact that Prince George is a Royal or even an heir to the throne that informed his wardrobe choices today.
In the case of Prince George, he must dress as the other men do in the Royal Box. Invitations for this seating area come directly from the chair of the All England Club, and with it come clear instructions on how to dress.
The Wimbledon website states: "Protocol - dress is smart, suits/jacket and tie, etc. Ladies are asked not to wear hats, as they tend to obscure the vision of those seated behind them."
However, the rules don't always seem to be so set in stone. In fact, Prince George and Princess Charlotte's very attendance is a slight rule bend, as children are typically not allowed in the Royal Box.
Meanwhile, hats are typically not allowed, but these rules have been bent in recent years as temperatures have soared during Wimbledon.
