Speaking to TalkTV, Mr Farage claimed that both the outgoing Prime Minister and the Chief Constable of Devon and Cornwall Police had given him the information.

"They both told me it’s a burglary that’s gone wrong," he told the channel. He has frequently expressed growing fears about his safety and those of his MPs.

However, Mr Farage fumed that he did not believe the Prime Minister.

"I said no, it is not, a burglar does not park his car on your drive and walk into the house. A burglar parks in the lay-by down the road and has a getaway driver," he said.

Earlier this week, Reform was forced to offer private security to its representatives after they accused the police and the Government of not stumping up the protection themselves.

The Home Secretary has offered to arrange for Mr Farage to meet the bosses of the body responsible for protecting MPs.

Speaking in Dartmoor on Saturday, where he was laying a floral tribute to Miss Widdecombe, Mr Farage said he had no doubt it was "a premeditated murder" – a claim he repeated on Wednesday.

It marks the latest escalation in a war of words between Reform UK and the Government, with Robert Jenrick, the party's treasury spokesman, saying their rivals were "playing politics" with his boss's life.

He said that ministers had chosen not to give Mr Farage protection because they disagreed with his political views.

This is a claim ministers robustly deny.

A spokesman for the Home Office said accusations made by Mr Jenrick were "categorically untrue", adding: "Nigel Farage has been offered a meeting with the chair of Ravec – the independently chaired committee that manages the security of those in public life."
