Mary Berry is one of the UK's most famous media figures, having been a staple of our screens for decades. During the 2010s, her fame grew further when she was a judge on The Great British Bake Off between 2010 and 2016. She has also written around 75 cookbooks.

Following her departure from the show, Mary Berry has remained a popular and authoritative figure in the baking world. However, in recent years she has spoken more about her health and recently discussed how she is thinking about the future at the age of 91.

Speaking on the Grow, Cook, Eat, Arrange podcast, she and the interviewer discussed two topics relating to her garden that were of interest: evergreens and lawns.

Mary said she had to make a specific decision about which evergreens to buy because she admitted she couldn't afford to wait for them to grow.

She said: “Evergreens, a yew is, we put hedges in a yew. And obviously you should buy evergreens like a yew. I suppose about two foot high and wait

“Well I’ll be in heaven then so we had to buy them fairly big, I suppose they were about four foot because we needed them to get to the top of the tennis court netting.”

Mary added that she needed them to be a certain height to ensure privacy at the front of her house, so people would be less able to peer in.

She explained: “And also we wanted them at the front of the house because people walking along outside could peer in and now, in six years, it’s well above six foot, which is a joy.”

Whilst Mary has acknowledged she is getting older, her health has proved a talking point for many. In response, she has discussed what she does and does not do to stay healthy.

Earlier this year, she admitted that one of the things she avoids is processed foods. Speaking on the Lessons From Our Mothers podcast, Mary said she goes to her local butcher or supermarket to buy fresh food.

She said: "I avoid processed foods. Absolutely definitely. I love to shop at a farm shop and I don't mind knobbly vegetables. I go to my supermarket, I go to the butchers. If you go to a butchers you'll get advice as well as good meat."

Mary has also spoken about her exercise routine alongside the foods she avoids. She admitted to avoiding the gym, choosing instead to do other forms of activity.

She told the Mail: “I don’t do gyms. What a waste of time! What’s wrong with having a nice run out with a dog? The outdoors is what makes us healthy, what makes us well.”
