Costa Coffee to shut third UK cafe in weeks leaving locals ‘gutted’

Costa Coffee remains the UK’s largest branded coffee chain despite having closed dozens of sites in the past few months.

Now the retailer will bid farewell to yet another of its 2,000 branches within days.

Locals in Inverness, Scotland will see one of the town centre locations shut-shop for good, on Wednesday, July 24.

The branch is one of two near one another, located just a short walk away from the River Ness and beside the National Memorial of Scotland on Inglis Street.

Interestingly, it’s rated more highly on Google than the alternative Costa cafe which will remain open at Station Square, Academy Street, and has rocked the boat with locals who frequent the site.

The loss of the Inverness Centre store comes just days after a Costa Coffee branch in West Sussex announced its shock closure.

A notice appeared on the window of the cafe in Sydney Road, Haywards Heath, located near the railway station, stating that the store is permanently shut.

The notice read: “This store is now closed. Thank you to all of our customers. Your closest store is not far: Costa Coffee Haywards Heath, 72 South Road, Haywards Heath, RH16 4LA.”

It followed yet another closure of a Costa branch in The Martlets, Burgess Hill just one week earlier.

Several people took to Facebook to share their disappointment at the news of the Inverness store closing, with one person writing: “Gutted, it’s the preferred choice out of that and eastgate.” Another said: “Costa and FarFeched closing in the space of a week? Sad times.”

A spokesperson said conversations had been ongoing with the store team since April, and claimed that they hoped to to find them positions elsewhere.

They told local news publication The D&J: “We can confirm that our Costa Coffee store on Inglis Street in Inverness is due to close for trade in July.

“We are currently having conversations with all of our store team members, and aim to re-deploy our talented baristas to nearby stores.”

The city-centre cafe has garnered glowing reviews from customers on Google, one who wrote: “The staff are perfect and very polite. Especially Paul who made me coffee exactly how I wanted it for the first time in this coffee chain. Very clean and tidy. Highly recommend.”

Another commented: “I love decent coffee and am a fan of Costa. This store is one of their older ones and has a lovely friendly team who take the time to chat with their customers. There are a group of loyal regulars who continue to come to this branch due to the Costa team who work there. They make the store, plus they serve really good coffee. Highly recommended.”

A third chimed: “Went in here for coffee which was excellent it wasn’t very busy at the time we went which was good.”
