Boulter provides immediate answer for US Open exit in scathing assessment | Tennis | Sport

Katie Boulter admitted she had played “not to lose and rather than to win” after crashing out of the US Open to the world No.74.

The British No.1 told her team “Everything’s horrendous today” as she went down 7-5 7-5 to Jessica Bouzas Maneiro on Court 5.

The “passive” No.31 seed had her service broken five times and said she lacked aggression and the right attitude on the big points. The Spanish baseliner, 21, had never won a match at the US Open before this week.

“I think you get caught between not trying to be a charity and making mistakes,” said the Leicester City fan.

“I feel like I played that match not wanting to lose rather than trying to win and I have to remind myself that I’m here to win. I have to remind myself that I’m an aggressive player.

“I felt like I allowed her to play her game and In the tough moments, I was a little bit passive, and I wasn’t strong enough.

“You have to almost stamp your authority a little bit and tell yourself that you’re the aggressor. I was trying to put the ball in the court and make her play instead of me playing my game. At this level, you can’t do that. Not my best day.”

Boulter has yet to get beyond the third round of a Grand Slam in 14 main draw appearances.

After her first round win, Boulter had said she was targeting a deep run in Majors but she has won only three matches in the four biggest tournaments this year.

“I have to win these matches,” she admitted.

Sky Sports analyst Tim Henman added: It’s not a good performance in the second round of a Grand Slam.”

Her defeat also ends British interest in the women’s singles here.

Boulter admitted playing the Olympics had affected her preparations for the hardcourt Grand Slam. “I would be lying to myself if I I said it didn’t, but I knew that,” she said.

The world No.33, who is in the doubles with Russian Kalinskaya, added: it is a question for my team whether it’s worthwhile playing doubles as well as singles. I’m not entirely sure.”

World No.1 Iga Swiatek needed only 65 minutes to beat Japanese qualifier Ena Shibahara 6-0 6-1.

Wimbledon finalist Jasmine Paolini reached the US Open third round for the third time when former world No.1 Karolina Pliskova retired after only three points.

“I think it is so sad,” said the Italian. “It is bad to leave the court like that. I don’t know what to say. I didn’t play a match. It is not good for tennis. I hope she recovers and we see her back on court soon.”

American Ashlyn Krueger shocked No.21 seed Mirra Andreeva 6-1 6-4. “To be in the third round at my home Grand Slam is a dream,” said the 20-year-old.
