‘Easy’ storage hack for keeping salad leaves ‘fresher for longer’

When it comes to food shopping, every time we go to the supermarket we notice that prices are getting higher and higher.

The cost of living crisis has seen the UK hit with rising bills and Brits cutting down on food shopping.

So, preserving food and keeping it fresh for as long as possible is something that is at the forefront of our minds.

Not only in a bid to save some cash but also to reduce the amount of food that we waste.

According to Business Waste, the UK throws away a staggering 9.5 million tonnes of food each year.

This is despite the county having more than 8.4 million people in the UK living in food poverty.

Thankfully Asda have come to the rescue with combating food waste and in particular salad leaves.

Not only does the product last just for a few days after you have opened a bag but it tends to wilt pretty quickly, right?

According to the supermarket giant, there is an “easy” to combat this – with a “little bit of kitchen roll”.

Asda said: “Either wrap any leftover leaves in kitchen roll and refrigerate, or if you don’t want to remove them from the bag, simply add some paper towels to help absorb excess moisture as they chill.

“Finally, you can easily bring any limp leaves back to life by plunging them in cold water. (Hint: This trick also works well on peppers!)”

Other foods which can be kept fresher for longer in kitchen roll include berries and vegetables to soak off the excess moisture.

Herbs and mushrooms may also benefit from being placed on the kitchen staple.
