Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s trip to Colombia has been labelled as “wasteful spending” by an official.
The office of the country’s vice president Francia Marquez, who invited the Sussexes to visit Colombia after watching their Netflix documentary Harry & Meghan, has revealed that the four-day trip cost nearly £45,000 ($244,245,305).
The cost included internal transport throughout the visit and security. Harry and Meghan paid for their own flights, their accommodation in Bogota and general expenses.
It was Maria Fernanda Cabal, a right-wing senator and opponent of the vice-president, who requested the figures. Cabal, has previously dismissed the quasi-royal tour as “showmanship”, branded it “wasteful spending”.
The Colombian government said the visit had “contributed to continue demonstrating that Colombia is a country of confluence for global causes, a country capable of hosting diverse interests, as well as an attractive destination for investment, tourism and business”.
