There have been some incredibly underrated Westerns of the 21st century from Christian Bale’s Hostiles to the contemporary set Hell or High Water.
But have you ever seen a Western horror? We don’t mean a horror Western with supernatural elements like vampires, but a Western with horror elements.
The most underrated of these in recent years has to be Kurt Russell’s 2015 film Bone Tomahawk.
Set in the 1890s, this 18 certificate Western follows the star’s small-town sheriff who leads a posse to rescue three people who cannibalistic Native Americans have abducted.
Critically acclaimed upon release with 91 per cent on Rotten Tomatoes, the movie has been compared to John Wayne’s The Searchers and called the best Western since Clint Eastwood’s Unforgiven.
However, this Western (which co-stars Patrick Wilson and Matthew Fox) is not for the faint-hearted with some incredibly brutal scenes of violence during the latter cave scenes.
Made on a budget of just $1.8 million, the movie found success in home media sales after a limited cinematic release but continues to be an underrated classic of the Wild West genre.
Bone Tomahawk is streaming now on Amazon Prime Video.
