How to prevent condensation with 69p kitchen cupboard item

As the months get colder, households face more condensation on their windows and walls. Condensation happens when your home is too humid and warm air hits cold surfaces.

The air cools quickly and forms droplets on nearby surfaces. Activities such as drying clothes and even breathing can release moisture into the air in your home.

Homeowners will need to prevent the constant buildup of condensation as this could lead to stubborn mould forming.

Luckily, a home-cleaning lifestyle creator on TikTok has shared a simple way of preventing condensation overnight using a key household item.

Nazia x Home, who has over 110,000 followers, shared a video with the caption: “Hack to remove condensation. Leaving it on overnight.” So, what’s the secret to this viral hack? Washing up liquid – which can be found in most households or can be bought for just 69p in Tesco and Aldi.

Three simple steps to remove the mould:

  1. Wipe your window sills and frames

  2. Apply a small amount of washing liquid on a microfibre cloth

  3. Apply on the window

As seen in the video, the windows are left clear. According to Home Things, this hack works. The washing-up liquid forms a barrier on the surface of the windows, preventing the water from sticking. So, in the space of just a few minutes, you can stop the damp, mould, and mildew that wet windows can cause.

Some TikTok viewers took to the comments to complain about this method. One said: “Im fed up of condensation honesty!! That’s not good, it has to sit somewhere if not in your windows it’ll sit on doors, wallas skirting boards causing more mold.”

Another commented: “Don’t do it the moisture has to go somewhere so if it cant go on windows it will sit on your ceiling, walls etc – much easier to wipe off glass which won’t absorb. other surfaces absorb get damp and mouldy.”

A third wrote: “It worked for me but water was on the frames and ledges this morning so not much difference.”

There are many methods for preventing condensation in your home, but Envirovent suggests the best way to stop condensation is to install an extractor fan.

The home experts said: “Adequate ventilation is essential to allow the moisture to escape from a property before it turns into condensation. Installing an energy-efficient extractor fan in the kitchen and bathroom can improve the humidity levels and prevent condensation.”
