Traffic chaos on a major UK motorway should come to an end once a million-pound mega project is complete.

The Wichelstowe southern access scheme is one which involves a major construction project to create additional access to the Wichelstowe development located in the south of England.

The Wichelstowe southern access road (WSA) is located to the southwest of Swindon and crosses the M4 motorway to the east of Junction 16.

Funded by the Department for Transport and Swindon Borough Council to the tune of £28.7million, the scheme comes with many benefits.

It will help support 4,500 new homes and the new district centre and will unlock 12.5 hectares of employment land, supporting 2,000 new jobs.

The purpose of the project is to provide access to Wichelstowe, and the majority of it, including an underpass and roundabout, has been completed.

The new underpass runs beneath the M4 and was built while keeping three lanes of the motorway open.

The underpass forms part of the connection between Hay Lane and Wharf Road, Redposts Drive to the north and Croft Road to the east through Wichelstowe.

It also forms part of the connection between Hay Lane and Wharf Road via a new roundabout on the south side.

Now, all that is left of the scheme is the completion of a new road, Wichel Way, which will connect to Wichelstowe and be completed by the developers of the Wichelstowe site.

The road will also provide facilities for walking and cycling while avoiding the junction 16.
