What your favourite dog breed says about your personality

Bill Lambert, spokesperson for The Kennel Club, said: “It appears that we can often tell a lot about a person from the type of dog that they own.”

Lambert, who runs Discover Dogs, added: “Each breed has distinct characteristics, traits and care needs. It is quite striking to see how many people unconsciously select dog breeds with personalities that match their own character.”

Take a Jack Russell, for example, whose owners are thought to be loyal, helpful, friendly and good listeners. People who own Cocker Spaniels, on the other hand, rated themselves highly on curiosity and being family orientated.

Those who have a Springer Spaniel are regarded as the most traditional, reserved and punctual people. And Border Terrier owners are seen as the most charming, lively and exuberant of personalities.

Meanwhile, Cocker Spaniel owners are the most creative and family-orientated while people who favour the Staffordshire Bull Terrier are the most affectionate. People who preferred the Miniature Schnauzer are seen as the most loyal and faithful.

Lambert pointed out that a lot of dog owners selected the breed using their heart and not following their head.

Up to 50 percent of people involved in the survey revealed they can’t offer their dog everything they need, which Lambert said is “shocking”.

When finding a pet, it’s crucial to consider the breed’s needs, including physical activity levels. For more information about finding the right breed, visit discoverdogs.org.uk
