Just because temperatures are dropping, doesn’t mean your garden has to go dormant.

With the right plants, you can keep your outdoor space vibrant and inviting throughout the autumn and winter months.

Expert James Ewens from Alexander Francis recommends focusing on plants that offer blooms, scents, berries, and evergreen foliage to bring warmth and colour during the colder seasons.

He suggests seven standout plants that will keep your garden thriving even in winter’s chill.

1. Strawberry Tree (Arbutus unedo)

Known for its clusters of white or pink-tinged bell-shaped flowers from October to December, the Strawberry Tree is a versatile option for autumn and winter gardens.

“It can be grown in large containers, making it a great choice for patios or courtyards,” James told GB News.

Plus, it’s drought-tolerant and ideal for areas with challenging drainage, such as slopes or banks.

2. Clematis Cirrhosa

An evergreen climber that retains its green foliage year-round, Clematis Cirrhosa produces bell-shaped, creamy white or pale yellow flowers from November through March.

“Its cascading flowers add elegance to pergolas or doorway displays, bringing winter charm to your garden,” James explains.

3. Witch Hazel (Hamamelis × intermedia)

This plant, known for its unique spidery, ribbon-like flowers in shades of yellow, orange, and red, blooms from December to March.

“The magical thing about Witch Hazel is that many varieties have a sweet, spicy scent that can be enjoyed even on the coldest days,” said James.

Known for its durability, Witch Hazel’s vibrant blooms can even peek through snow, adding a splash of color to winter landscapes.

4. Winter Iris (Iris unguicularis)

For gardeners seeking minimal maintenance, the Winter Iris is a perfect fit.

Its lilac and pale purple blooms appear from October to March, creating a subtle yet striking display. James recommends planting it in a sunny, warm spot to encourage flowering. 

5. Elaeagnus pungens (Maculata Elaeagnus)

With large, leathery leaves featuring bright yellow centers, Elaeagnus pungens is an autumn favourite.

“This shrub also produces silvery white flowers with a wonderful fragrance, which attract pollinators,” James explained.

Versatile and weather-resistant, it works well as a hedge, standalone feature, or part of a mixed border.

6. Mahonia × media ‘Charity’

This winter favourite produces bright yellow, spiky flower clusters through autumn and winter, followed by blue-black berries—a feast for birds emerging from hibernation.

“Its spiny leaves add structure, creating a strong background for other feature plants like the strawberry tree or Witch Hazel,” James suggested.

7. Clematis cirrhosa var. balearica

This distinctive Clematis variety brings an extra dash of beauty to colder months, with creamy white or pale green flowers marked with brown specks inside, blooming from late autumn to early spring.

“Its fine and glossy evergreen leaves bring color all year, making it an excellent choice for trellises, fences, or walls,” James said.
